They say the best thing you can do to add value or update your home or property is to paint it.
Agreed! It is amazing to see the transformative nature of a well chosen colour palette. It can take a tired, outdated space and turn it into your own mini retreat.
To some, painting sounds simple, but there is actually quite a bit of chemistry involved in selecting the proper products to best suit the environment and surfaces involved.
Personally, I love the science behind why & how things work, and how this determines the best painting solution for my clients. (see blog)
Having painted in Sydney’s East for over 22 years, working with homeowners, architects, builders and colour consultants, we have seen many examples of transformation.
It is a privilege to help our clients discover a renewed happiness with the spaces they live in, and to know they will enjoy it for many years to come!
Here are our 3 secrets to a good paint job.
By asking the right questions we’re able to advise and tailor the best painting solutions for every client.
For example, Do you need a quick freshen up, or is this your forever home? Do you have active family members playing soccer in the hallway or a dog that lounges across your skirting boards? These considerations will dictate which paint finishes would be most suitable in your home. As one of our clients mentioned, “The other guy quoting didn’t ask me any questions, they just gave me a quote, but you took time to really understand our situation and recommend paints based on our lifestyle and goals.”
The brief: It was was easy enough – fix the recently painted timber door, frames & skirtings which had sheets of paint peeling off!
The obstacle: The problem was the lack of knowledge (or care) by the previous applicator. Good paint had been applied to a glossy surface without proper preparation, making the top coats of paint unable to adhere properly and start peeling off like confetti.
The solution: we had to strip off all the old failing paint and properly prepare the surfaces (clean and sand) followed by the use of a high adhesion undercoat. The actual painting took less than half the time of removing the failing paint and mess
The moral is: proper preparation is essential & technical, it costs more up front to set foundations, but it will save time, money, hassles in the long run and be rewarding well into the future.
As a local Dulux Accredited painter we were invited to work in partnership with a local building company on a tricky site in Bondi.
The brief: Paint the steel support beams for a new house. Sounds easy enough and the steel was already primed. On closer inspection and testing we discovered the existing primer was weak and it exposed some rusted steel underneath. Just painting over the top of that would have led to many problems down the road.
The solution: to thoroughly prepare the structural steel beams and paint the now stable, bare steel surface with 3 coats of Industrial Grade paints that are fit for purpose.
When you’re protecting structural steel for a new house that’s a stone’s throw from the Bondi waves you’ve got to do it right.
Frequently Asked Questions
We primarily use Dulux paints, although some clients have requested Porters and other specialty products. We’re also familiar with a wide range of protective coatings necessary for many properties located near the coast.
However, we would strongly suggest getting a few quotes and never taking the cheapest one.
